Types of Koi Fish

  1. Kohaku: Kohaku is one of the most beloved and easily recognizable varieties of koi fish. It features a solid white body with vibrant red markings on its skin. The quality of the red coloration is crucial in determining the value of a Kohaku koi. The ideal Kohaku will have a bright, even, and intense red color.
  2. Showa: Showa koi are known for their striking black coloration, red and white markings, and accents of blue. The three main colors on a Showa koi–black, red, and white–should be well-balanced and evenly distributed. Showa with a clean and distinct pattern is highly prized by koi collectors.
  3. Taisho Sanke: Taisho Sanke, often referred to as “Sanke,” is another popular variety of koi fish. It combines three colors: white, red, and black. The ideal Sanke will have a clean white base with well-defined red markings and a balanced distribution of black patterns. The contrast between the three colors is essential to the beauty of this variety.
  4. Ogon: Ogon koi are prized for their metallic scales, which come in various colors such as silver, gold, platinum, and orange. The simplicity of their single-color pattern allows their metallic sheen to stand out. Ogon koi are known for their elegant and reflective appearance.
  5. Shusui: Shusui koi are a cross between a German mirror carp and an Asagi koi. They have a light blue color on their dorsal area, with reticulated scales and red-orange coloration along their sides. Shusui koi are known for their unique and eye-catching appearance, often resembling a dragon or a phoenix.
